Former UA student accused of putting newborn in bag accepts plea deal

TUCSON - A former University of Arizona student accused of giving birth in her dorm room then putting the baby in a plastic bag at the end of her bed, has pleaded guilty.

Sarah Tatum, accepted a plea deal Tuesday afternoon, pleading guilty to child abuse and aggravated assault.

Tatum is facing a minimum of seven years and a maximum of 15 years on the aggravated assault charge.

On the child abuse charge, the minimum sentence is three years and the maximum is 12.5 years.

Tatum will be required to serve her sentences consecutively.

Tatum told investigators she thought she had miscarried when she gave birth to the baby boy in February 2009.

The baby survived and is in state custody.
