Former TPD officer in protective custody, awaits extradition on child porn charges

TUCSON - A former officer of the law was arrested Friday evening and charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a minor. Martin Ward, 29 was taken into custody after authorities tracked him down at motel in Prescott, Ariz.

Police discovered Ward's stash of child pornography during the course of an investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit that began in March. The investigation was seeking suspects that were sharing and distributing child pornography online.

Detectives apparently identified an online user from a home in the 9200 block of East Palm Tree Drive sharing multiple files. That suspect was then identified as Ward.

Ward was an officer with Tucson Police Dept. from April 2007 till December 2012, when he resigned in lieu of termination.

Prior police reports reveal that in July of 2012, Ward's then live-in girlfriend filed a report with Pima County Sheriff's Dept. saying she had seen Ward on an online chat talking about having sex with a child. The documents also report that the same girlfriend made allegations to police that Ward drank excessively and abused prescription drugs.

U.S. Marshalls assisted TPD in tracking down and arresting Ward.
