HEBER, Ariz. (AP) - An increase in the number of bears spotted on the Mogollon Rim has forced an emergency closure of a Forest Service road in northeastern Arizona.
Officials with the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest say Forest Road 171 to Young Road is closed for the public's safety.
The road is just south of Arizona Highway 260. There is no access or dispersed camping until the area is cleared of bears.
There have been no reports of bears attacking anyone in the Heber area. But forest officials are reminding campers to store food away from sleeping areas and use bear-resistant trash receptacles at developed campgrounds.
