Fiesta Bowl lays off undisclosed number of workers

PHOENIX (AP) - Citing projected declines in revenue, the Fiesta Bowl has laid off an undisclosed number of employees.

The bowl's interim executive director, Duane Woods, won't say how many employees were let go Friday.

Woods tells the Arizona Republic that the bowl doesn't have the revenue pieces it used to have.

He says the Fiesta Bowl is trimming its staff as the organization transitions from the Bowl Championship Series into the new College Football Playoff that begins this year.

That new 12-year deal allows the Fiesta to host a semifinal playoff game every three years and other top-tier match-ups in non-playoff years. But it doesn't produce as much revenue for the bowl.

In the old system, the Fiesta reaped millions of dollars by hosting a BCS title game every four years.
