TUCSON - Two local men are believed to be missing in Mexico after they traveled there to visit family on Jan. 8 and no one has seen or heard from them since then.
Erik Lorta and Manuel Castro were last seen on Wednesday Jan. 8th when they traveled to Santa Cruz, Sonora, a town just minutes away from Nogales. Their families are still searching for answers.
Erik Lorta's family tells News 4 Tucson that the two went to visit Lorta's mother who lives in Mexico. They were scheduled to return to Tucson the same day but have since gone missing. They were last seen heading back to Tucson driving a 2014 Black GMC Sierra Truck. It's unclear if the two successfully crossed the border into the U.S.
"We want them to be okay," said Yasmin Rosales, Erik's girlfriend.
Rosales, who has a 2-month-old son with Erik, has been living on edge.
"We don't know anything. We thought he got in a car accident ... but we already looked everywhere, his family, his mom, the police in Mexico did a search in his town in Nogales and nobody knows anything," Rosales said.
Erik's mother Maria joined family in Tucson and said through a translator that she hates the uncertainty.
Both families are trying to stay strong as they depend on each other through this stressful time.
As for Rosales, she has high hopes that the two will return safely.
"We have faith that he'll come back alive," Rosales said.
Tucson Police have received a report on the missing men and are following up on it. The family said that Mexican authorities have been searching as well.
