TUCSON - A tunnel was discovered underneath a Douglas house this morning - authorities are still exploring the tunnel and working to locate an entrance south of the border.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say that the tunnel had collapsed, and smugglers were in the process of re-excavating it when it was discovered by the Douglas Police Department.
The police were called by a citizen who reported the tunnel, who in turn called ICE Homeland Security Investigations and the Border Patrol.
After an extensive exploration of the tunnel, authorities still don't know how extensive the tunnel might be. There is an extensive amount of dirt in the Douglas house where the tunnel was found, but Mexican authorities were unable to locate an entrance south of the border.
Customs and Border Protection teams will remediate the tunnel entrance in the coming weeks, and will attempt to locate the tunnel beneath the Douglas streets.
HSI is continuing to investigate and is seeking the individuals who rented the house.
