TUCSON - A local couple is accused of stealing more than $150,000 from a 92 year old patient in their care. The accusations go back to 2012, but the suspects were just arrested after a lengthy investiagation.
Joseph Wingate and his wife, Rebecca Wingate, face multiple charges including Theft From a Vulnerable Adult and Fraudulent Schemes and Artifices.
The victim' s family notified detectives when they noticed movement of her money in her account. They also discovered changes to the victim's trust and that $150,000.00 had been gifted to Joseph Wingate, the owner of Wingate Adult Care Home.
After investigating, detectives learned that between July 2012 and February 2013, the Wingate's got power of attorney from the woman and changed her will.
Investigators say The Wingates went to Disneyland, bought a van, and began building a garage to house their new van as well as other items. The victim never gave Mr. Wingate permission to use her finances, have access to her trust, or allowed him to change her will making his family the heirs.
