TUCSON - Tucson's signature cycling event, the annual "El Tour De Tucson", was set to make a big announcement on Wednesday, at Casino Del Sol, regarding a new corporate sponsorship. But the news conference was abruptly cancelled with no official explanation.
The purpose of the gathering was to introduce El Tour's new title sponsor and announce the new primary beneficiary. The former beneficiary, Tu Nidito, an organization that provides support services for children and their families here in Tucson had been events charity for the last seventeen years.
This time around they were told they were out. The loss of funds for Tu Nidito amounts to $300,000 and while it has hit the organization hard, it's Chief Operating Officer, Ciara Garcia, says they are finding other ways to make up for the deficit, "We're committed to make sure we don't lose services, we really don't want to share with the community that we are about to close our doors or anything like that", Garcia said, "We're not, the reality is we have to replace those funds to continue to do what we do."
Garcia says Tu Tidito was able to recoup some of the money, raising $140,000, through their "Ride for a Child" program. Tu Nidito is hoping cyclists who ride in El Tour this year will join them to push that amount even higher.
There is still no official word on the title sponsor for the race although Perimeter Bicycling Association of America did confirm that the new sponsor is a major international non-profit.
