TUCSON - An E. Coli outbreak in Arizona and four other states has been tied to cheese sold or sampled at Costco stores in October.
At least 25 confirmed E. Coli cases have occurred in five states, including 11 cases in Arizona and 2 in Pima County. There are also cases in California, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.
Early data from health officials suggests that Dutch-style Gouda cheese is the source, but they are still investigating. The Arizona State Public Health Laboratory is testing several samples.
Health officials say the illnesses may be associated with "Cheese Road Shows" held by Costco during October, where cheese is served and sold.
Costco is cooperating with the investigation: they have removed all suspect products from shelves and are notifying customers who purchased cheese from the road show.
Health officials say that E. Coli symptoms appear 1-10 days after consuming a contaminated product, and can cause blood diarrhea and abdominal pains.
If you have these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. Health officials say if you are concerned about your Costco cheese, return it to the store where you purchased it.
