TUCSON - You may be one of almost 9,000,000 Americans who have lost a job in the economic downturn. Employment experts are convinced that downsizing and layoffs are here to stay.
No one is feeling very secure, with the economy struggling, and unemployment at a painful 8.5%
That, says financial expert Dr. Michael Sullivan of 'Take Charge America,' is the new reality.
"You should expect this job is going to end, because pretty much all jobs do end," he said.
Dr. Sullivan said every worker should keep their resume up to date, keep their contacts warm, network, and acquire the computer and technical skills now demanded by almost every employer.
Sullivan said this is key; "are you earning your salary, is the company really making something off you, so that you're a contributor. Because if you're not, then it's a sure sign that you're likely to be one of the ones to go when people have to go."
And, Sullivan said the signs of layoffs will be there. For instance, if your company's industry is going downhill, your assignments may change, your boss may suddenly ignore you, or treat you differently...
Should you fear a layoff, financial counselors urge you to save your money. They said you'll need at least 6 months of living expenses.
It's a matter of preparation, not paranoia. The new reality of being prepared to re-invent yourself.
