Diamondbacks sign Cody Ross

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with outfielder Cody Ross on a three-year contract with a club option for 2016, according to D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Ross, who turns 32 tomorrow, hit .267 (127-for-476) with 34 doubles, 22 home runs and 81 RBI in 130 games with Boston in 2012. He established a career-high with a .807 OPS in his lone season with the Red Sox, led the club with a .481 slugging percentage and tied for the team lead with 57 extra-base hits.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder ranks fifth in the Major Leagues with a .575 slugging percentage vs. left-handed pitchers since 2003, trailing Ryan Braun (.657), Albert Pujols (.656), Matt Kemp (.579) and David Wright (.575).

Ross is a career .262 (763-for-2,912) hitter with 186 doubles, 122 home runs and 452 RBI in 887 Major League games with Detroit (2003), Los Angeles-NL (2005-06), Cincinnati (2006), Florida (2006-10), San Francisco (2010-11) and Boston (2012). He has posted five consecutive seasons with at least 25 doubles and 7 straight of 10 home runs or more, including a career-best 24 with the Marlins in 2009.

Ross, who resides in Scottsdale, hit .294 (15-for-51) with 5 doubles, 5 home runs and 10 RBI in 15 postseason games for the World Series champion Giants in 2010. He garnered NLCS Most Valuable Player honors vs. Philadelphia after batting .350 with 3 home runs and 5 RBI, becoming only the fifth player in Major League history to start the season with a different team and win an LCS or World Series MVP award.

He has made 387 career appearances in center field, 345 in right and 194 in left.

Ross was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft.

In a corresponding move to put Ross on the 40-man roster, infielder Gustavo Nunez cleared waivers and was returned to the Detroit Tigers. Nunez was claimed off outright waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on October 26. The Pirates had selected Nunez from the Tigers in the Rule 5 Draft in 2011.
