NACO, Arizona - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a smuggling attempt when they intercepted 147 pounds of marijuana being passed over the border fence by rope.
CBP officers were screening and processing traffic when they noticed an attempted breach of the security fence near the Naco port of entry. The officers found smugglers had tied ropes to three burlap bundles of marijuana and were lowering them over the fence and into the United States. Two of the bundles had already been lowered.
The officers grabbed the last bundle being lowered after the smugglers gave up trying to retrieve the marijuana and ran off. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $668,000.
