TUCSON - Detectives say a known prostitute with an expensive drug habit is found dead back in July of 1997. The Pima County Medical Examiner's office says the body was so badly decomposed, they couldn't determine the cause of death.
The Pima County Sheriff's Cold Case unit is now reviewing the case of Jeanette Brown.
She was 29 years old when she was found wrapped in a carpet and tossed off the side of cliff in Reddington Pass. On July 15, 1997 people whose car broke down and were walking to get help when they spotted a vehicle that had gone off a cliff. Detective Kelly Anderson says, "As they were investigating this car that looked like an accident they saw the body rolled up with the victim a little bit further down."
Investigators say the vehicle was stolen and don't know if its connected to the murder but on the car the words "help me" were written on it.
Detective Anderson believes Brown was involved in a check cashing fraud scheme. The mastermind he says was her boyfriend a man who went by the name of Carl or Larry.
"He may have been the last person that we know of that was with Jeanette."
Witnesses describe Carl or Larry as an African American man mid to late 30's, 5'10 to 6'00 tall, weighing 200 lbs. He had slick back hair.
Investigators were never able to locate him. Detective Anderson says, "Jeanette had told some friends at the time that she wasn't getting her money from this fraud enterprise or her share of the money from this Carl or Larry and that she was very unhappy about that."
Detective Anderson says there was another possible suspect. He's since learned that individual died, that's why the detective says it's very important to find the person who went by the name of Carl or Larry so that he can close the case.
Detective Anderson has found some items that may help the case. He's submitting them for DNA testing.
