Crews work lightning-caused wildfire south of Benson

BENSON - A wildfire burning in the Whetstone Mountains in the Coronado National Forest has now moved to the peak of the mountain and is heading northeast.

The Cottonwood fire is between 1,000 to 1,500 acres and has zero containment, but is not threatening any structures. The lightning-caused fire, which started Monday afternoon, is burning in grass, brush, oak, pinyon pine and juniper.

Crews layed firelines around a blaze Thursday, about 10 miles south of Benson. They may also conduct burnout operations to keep the blaze away from Highway 90. Smoke from the burnout operations would likely be visible to visitors heading to nearby Kartchner Caverns State Park.
