TUCSON - School zone "speed enforcement" patrols are making their rounds.
With the back-to-school season in full swing, there are no warnings, because Pima County Sheriff Deputies are writing tickets.
They staked out the front of Flowing Wells Junior High School Wednesday morning. "This is just one school zone," says Sgt. Hanna. "We're operating other school zones throughout the county right now."
Hanna says if you are pulled over, they will check your driver's license, registration, insurance and seat belt. They will even check your sobriety. Sgt. Hanna says, "Parents are driving their kids to school drunk."
He says even at 8:00 a.m. people are driving under the influence. "We've seen drugs, DUI's, aggravated DUI's, child abuse DUI's," he says.
Hanna says the goal is to remind drivers that kids are walking everywhere around school zones. The crackdown will last from now thru May. "We made a push to hit every single school zone in Pima County, which we were able to do. We're going to continue that," he says.
Deputies will set up a weekend sobriety check point to coincide with the U of A and Pima Community College starting back up again.
