TUCSON - Construction began today on the Cushing Street Bridge, a project that is said to be practical and promising to celebrating our city's culture with art.
"It will provide access from pedestrians, bicyclists, automobiles, the streetcar," said Gary Hayes, a member of the Pima Association of Governments and the regional RTA. "It will create a true point of connection, from the west side to the Downtown arena."
Jim Glock, Tucson's Transportation Director, said the project is, "Kind of commemorate - historical events in Tucson such as the arrival of the railroad, and Father Kino, and so on."
Councilmember Regina Romero expects the project to generate income.
"We have to invest in infrastructure, then the higher quality of life we need - private investment - that comes in," she said.
It's estimated that this project will create thousands of jobs, but it will also cost the city millions to maintain. City leaders and residents are cautiously optimistic.
"It's great to run around with the pom-poms and cheering this - it could be a wonderful thing," said Councilmember Steve Kozachik. "Problem is we know it's going to cost us. By our own estimates, $3 million a year in operation and maintenance."
That could mean the city loses about $4,000 a day.
But Victor Somers lives in Downtown and hopes the bridge strengthens the community.
He says the project is, "kind of blending of what's here and what was here, and I think it's good for the city."
