SANTA CRUZ COUNTY - With help from the community, four wild horses removed from the Rancho Resort in Sahuarita are about to start a new life. They're currently in the care of the Department of Agriculture.
Livestock officers corralled them earlier this week and found them a more fitting place to live.
The horses had been roaming the Rancho Resort in Sahuarita for a long time. And residents had become quite attached to them, but they also worried about the horse's welfare as they roamed the wild.
"Being so close to the freeway could be a potential hazard there, it's sad to see them go but we're happy they're going to go to a nice ranch," Shelby Stewardson said.
Rancher David Rychener has stepped up to take the horses. He owns a 3,200-acre ranch near Aravaipa Canyon.
On Saturday, the horses will say goodbye to livestock pens in Nogales and make their move to the ranch.
"I'm excited about seeing them run wild out there, and I feel like we're doing a service to these horses and I feel good about that," Rychener said.
Rychener has never owned wild horses before, but Karen Pomroy, a well known horse rescuer, contacted Rychener and now she's just glad to hear they'll have such a great future.
"They'll probably just live out in freedom, and be wild, which is what I believe they deserve," Pomroy said.
