The shocking number of drownings and near-drownings this summer has one organization diving into action.
Five drownings and fourteen near-drownings, in Pima County alone has Saguaro Aquatics offering the community a challenge.
They'll offer at least 100 low-income kids free swimming lessons this month if they can raise the necessary $10,000 in donations.
Saguaro Aquatics utilizes discussion and instruction in its approach.
As early as six months, kids can start learning to swim, but founder, Josh Franklin says, "After about 5-years-old, they have a much higher retention rate. Prior to 5-years-old, repetition's the foundation for what they're learning."
Franklin, startled by the recent drownings and near-drownings, wants to offer 100 children eight free swim lessons.
He says, swimming is "...part of our culture. We have our birthdays, parties and get-togethers around the pool. They can happen at any time so do not approach water safety seasonally. It is a year round issue."
Amanda Crawford is giving her children swim lessons because they love the water, and she loves them. Crawford says, "It's so hot that all the kids want to do is be in the pool, swimming and having a good time. With as many programs, like Saguaro Aquatics, there's just no reason for kids not to know how to swim or be safe around a pool."
If funded, through donations, the free swimming lessons will be offered for 2-to-6-year-olds.
