TUCSON - City workers are trying to keep pace with the pot holes scattered around Tucson while money approved for a $100 million bond to improve city streets won't be available until this summer.
Elaine Wald has lived in the Pueblo Gardens neighborhood for more than 30 years. She said there is one thing that hasn't changed there: plenty of roads and turns with pot holes.
"There's so many, there's more pot holes than flat areas," Wald said.
Wald had become so accustomed to living with pot holes that she changed her driving routine.
"In order for me to get into my driveway, I would have to go across the street and make a big turn so I could avoid the pot holes," Wald told News 4 Tucson.
Today, her roads were changed.
"They got filled, thank God," she said.
That's thanks to one of the eight crews the city deploys each day to fix up roads throughout the city. They are trying to keep pace with the problem while they wait for the bond money to become available.
"One of the factors that makes [pot holes] deteriorate quicker than otherwise is the penetration of water," said Daryl Cole, Director of the Tucson Department of Transportation.
Cole said the erratic weather we've experience speeds up the process for pot holes to deteriorate.
"When we have these weather events like we've been having and that moisture, that's when people start to see the pot holes," Cole told News 4 Tucson.
The sight of road repairs, though, puts a smile on Wald's face.
"I'm just glad that they're finally filling them up and I with that everybody didn't have [any] pot holes," Wald said.
City leaders said that when the bond program gets running this summer, the hope is that they will not have to make as many repairs as they do every day.
