TUCSON - The Chiricahua Mountains will reopen to the public on September 24, National Public Lands Day.
There is just one exception. Rustler Park Campground will remain temporarily closed.
The Chiricahuas' reopening comes three weeks ahead of schedule.
The Coronado National Forest had originally planned a reopening for October 15 to give Coronado personnel and Burned Area Emergency Response teams from around the country time to stabilize and repair the roads, trails, and infrastructure damaged by fire this past summer.
The timing of the reopening coincides also with hunting seasons and prime camping weather in the Chiricahua Mountains.
Also to coincide with the reopening, the Friends of Cave Creek will host a work day on Saturday, September 24.
If you're interested in volunteering, you should meet at the Cave Creek Visitor Information Center at 8:00am.
The Chiricahua Mountains took a devastating blow from the Horseshoe 2 Fire that started May 8 and consumed nearly 223,000 acres.
There is still a threat of falling trees and heavy rain runoff and mud flows, so visitors are advised to use caution as they enjoy the area once again.
You can also get current road and campground conditions by contacting the Douglas Ranger District office at 520-364-6800 Monday through Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm.
