FLAGSTAFF (AP) - Police say it "remains to be seen" whether a California man will face trespassing or other charges after jumping into a mine shaft in northern Arizona's Meteor Crater in what was reportedly an attempt to "appease the gods."

Coconino County Sheriff's officials said Parminder Singh told deputies after Thursday's eight-hour rescue in freezing temperatures that he intentionally jumped into the shaft, which is 100 feet deep and closed to the public.

Sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair says deputies believe Singh had "a broken arm and a broken leg and some abrasions." The 28-year-old Union City man is reported to be in fair condition.

Blair says Singh didn't elaborate on his comment that he took the leap to "appease the gods."

He said it's also unclear if Singh came all the way from California just to jump into the mine shaft.
