Students at Catalina Magnet High School are creating ornaments for the the Christmas tree which will be displayed at the US Capital building, showing off what the Grand Canyon State is all about.
It's another day in Kyle Pawlowski's English Language Development class at Catalina Magnet High School.
"We're working on some projects that have to do with Arizona culture and Arizona history", said Pawlowski. "A lot of them are new to Arizona".
So his students are using their knowledge of the state to make ornaments resembling the cactus and mountains Arizona is famous for.
Not only are they using the usual construction paper & colored pencils to make these Christmas decorations, they're also using something old to make something new! The staff at Catalina Magnet High School donated some items to be reused as ornaments, like old newspaper, old wrapping paper and used milk jugs.
One student said, "We're not wasting money. We're using other things and make new things out of it".
And going green is capturing the National spotlight. Out of 5,000 ornaments sent to adorn the Arizona-born tree, one Arizona student will win a trip to Washington DC.
"I'd like to go there and see the tree and how we made it, I'd like that", said one student.
It is a project that's teaching students about our state's past while preserving its future.
