TUCSON - Gone are the days when surgeons have to crack open the chest to perform heart surgery. An "alternative" is minimally invasive surgery, where only a small incision is made, and it's being done right here in Tucson.
Dr. Dereck "Von" Haag, the Medical Director of the Cardio-Thoracic Surgery program at Carondelet Heart and Vascular Institute stopped by to talk more about it.
Some of the benefits of this new technique include:
• Small incisions
• Small scars
• Shorter hospital stays after surgery
• Low risk of infection
• Low risk of bleeding and blood transfusion
• Shorter recovery time and faster return to normal activities/work.
• Significantly lower cost
