Camping closures to begin in eastern Arizona

SPRINGERVILLE, Ariz. (AP) - Forest officials are temporarily closing some camping areas affected by a wildfire in eastern Arizona's White Mountains earlier this summer.

The U.S. Forest Service says the closures will begin Friday in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and could remain in effect until next June.

Campers will be prohibited from certain areas that are being rehabilitated after being damaged by a wildfire two months ago.

The San Juan Fire burned more than 8 square miles two months ago.

Anyone caught violating the closures could face a fine of up to $5,000 and six months in prison.

Only people with a Forest Service permit or authorized by the agency to do business in the area will be permitted.
