Bystanders stopped fleeing suspect in deadly crash

TUCSON - Bystanders who witnessed a fatal crash Tuesday night stopped the suspect involved in the crash from running away.

The suspect, 22-year-old Miguel Carrizoza, crashed into 36-year-old Giovanni Sambrano just after 9 p.m. Tuesday when he ran a red light, Tucson Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer said in a release.

Sambrano was heading south on Swan Road when Carrizoza slammed into the driver side of his Toyota Camry as he was crossing at Speedway, Widmer said.

The force of the collision sent Carrizoza's car to veer off the road and into the front patio of Sir Veza's Taco Garage. Carrizoza tried to run from the scene but bystanders held him down until police arrived, Widmer said.

Sambrano was taken to the hospital where he died. Police said Carrizoza was under the influence when they arrested him. Carrizoza is charged with second degree murder, aggravated assault, criminal damage and leaving the scene of an accident.
