SIERRA VISTA - Yesterday's burnout operations successfully widened the fire line north of Ramsey Canyon Road, helping to keep the Monument Fire out of the path of residences in the area.
The Monument Fire is currently at 27,200 acres, and a crew of 1,189 people have the blaze 45 percent contained.
Today, crews will be conducting additional burnout operations between Ramsey Canyon and the southern edge of the contained Garden Fire, and other crews will be burning out along the southwestern side of the fire, north of Forest Road 61 in the Blind Canyon area.
Smoke and flames may be visible near Sierra Vista, but these will be controlled burned in favorable conditions, incident officials say. Winds are expected to be mild today, but temperatures will be high and relative humidity will be low, officials say.
