PHOENIX - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill exempting Uber and other rideshare companies from the regulations that traditional taxi and limo companies have.
The bill by Rep. Tom Forese of Gilbert exempts rideshare companies from commercial insurance requirements that affects traditional taxi and livery companies by not requiring drivers be insured at all times on the job. A driver who is working on the road but has not yet received a request for a ride is not insured unless the driver's personal insurance denies the claim, in which case Uber provides its contingent policy.
The bill is opposed by traditional taxi and limo companies and the insurance and banking industry.
Brewer vetoed the bill Thursday, saying the bill does not offer fundamental safeguards to protect riders.
