Brewer urges Obama to open Grand Canyon NP

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is taking an offer to use state money to keep the Grand Canyon open to the top.

Brewer and state legislative leaders sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to approve funding the Arizona park and other national parks.

The government shutdown that began Tuesday has forced many parks to close, hurting area economies.

The politicians said in a news release Friday night that at the very least they want the president to allow for state and private funding to reopen the parks.

Earlier this week, Brewer's staff called Grand Canyon Park Superintendent Dave Uberuaga and offered to find a way to pay for the park, but he rejected the overture.

Businesses in the nearby town of Tusayan also offered to pony up cash to pay for the park.
