Boy in serious condition following crash involving deputy's car

TUCSON - A 10-year-old boy is in serious but stable condition following a 3-vehicle crash, involving a Pima County Sheriff's Department deputy.

It happened Sunday near La Canada and Orange Grove just before 8pm.

Investigators say the boy and his father were in a Silver Mazda.

A 73-year-old man was driving the second car. A 40-year-old woman was his passenger in the Grey Buick sedan.

Deputy Anthony Doran was in the third car.

Investigators were able to determine that the Mazda travelled westbound on Orange Grove Road. The traffic lights were reportedly green for his direction. The Buick was facing eastbound on Orange Grove Road and intended to make a left or northbound turn onto La Canada Drive.

Deputy Doran approached the intersection in his patrol vehicle with his emergency equipment activated. He was en route to a priority call.

The exact sequence of the following events is still under investigation.

The deputy's car rolled during the crash, trapping him for some time.

He was taken to Northwest Hospital for an evaluation.

The 10-year-old boy and 40-year-old passenger were taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center.
