Border Patrol agents seize $4M worth of pot during shutdown

TUCSON - Tucson Sector Border Patrol seized nearly $4 million in marijuana during the federal government shutdown.

During the 16-day period of the partial government shutdown, agents seized more than 7,000 pounds of marijuana, 10 smuggling vehicles, and illegal contraband in multiple incidents.

Last week, Tucson Sector Border Patrol was responsible for two separate marijuana seizures in excess of 1,800 pounds each. The seizures occurred on consecutive days near Tat Momoli, Ariz.

At Tucson Sector checkpoints, agents interdicted multiple subjects attempting to smuggle narcotics and illegal immigrants into the United States.

Agents discovered approximately one dozen illegal immigrants inside vehicle trunks with no visible means of escape or drinking water. A very distinctive incident occurred at the Highway 80 checkpoint where agents discovered nearly 30
