TUCSON - Tucson Sector Border Patrol has been busy the past two weeks securing the border, intercepting smugglers and illegal immigrants.
Last week, Border Patrol agents stopped a vehicle near Stanfield. Inside agents found five long-arm weapons, ammunition, marijuana and a stolen Border Patrol uniform. Agents arrested the driver and seized the vehicle, contraband and weapons.
Agents also caught several people attempting to smuggle narcotics and illegal immigrants into the United States. At the Interstate 19 checkpoint, agents arrested two U.S. citizens attempting to smuggle two Mexican nationals in the trunk of a vehicle. This smuggling method can prove to be fatal when the occupants are unable to escape in an emergency.
This week at the Highway 80 checkpoint, the Border Patrol conducted two consecutive days of vehicle narcotic seizures. In one incident, they seized a recreational vehicle with more than 500 pounds of marijuana hidden in multiple compartments. The following day they stopped a Chrysler van containing multiple bricks of marijuana, weighing more than 60 pounds, hidden inside a false roof compartment.
All subjects were processed for prosecution and/or removal proceedings in accordance with Tucson Sector prosecution guidelines.
