TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona volleyball team completed the annual Red-Blue Scrimmage with the Blue squad winning the four-set affair, 4-0 (25-17, 25-17, 33-31, 25-22), Saturday afternoon inside the McKale Center.
Sophomore Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.), a 2011 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team member, led the way with 18 kills on 47 attempts. Meanwhile, Shaquillah Torres (Riverside, Calif.) and Taylor Arizobal (Dana Hills, Calif.) had double-digit kill efforts with 14 and 11, respectively. Freshman setter Lauren Fuller (Los Angeles, Calif.) dished out 44 assists to go along with eight digs and three kills. Her counterpart, Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz.), finished with 35 assists and five kills on the day.
Junior Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) paced the defense with 20 digs on the afternoon. Alyse Hensley (San Diego, Calif.) and Ronni Lewis (San Jose, Calif.) finished with double-figure digs with 10 each. Hensley also had seven kills.
The Blue team was very efficient on the afternoon as they turned in a solid .326 team hitting percentage, while holding the Red team to just a .150 hitting percentage. The blocking battle was fairly even with the Red team gaining the slight 8.0-7.0 advantage.
Arizona's 32nd season of volleyball will get underway at home with the Wildcat Classic on Aug. 24-25. Arizona will open the tournament against Evansville and Cal State Northridge on Aug. 24 before closing out the event against Utah Valley on Aug. 25.
