SIERRA VISTA, AZ - The Bisbee City Council is poised to make the southeastern Arizona town the first in Arizona to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples.
According to the Sierra Vista Herald, an ordinance endorsed unanimously by the council on an initial vote Tuesday would give same-sex couples in civil unions the same rights in the city as opposite-sex married couples.
The City Council is scheduled to take formal action on the proposed ordinance on April 2.
Councilman Ken Budge calls the move long overdue. He describes Bisbee as a "compassionate and open city" doing the right thing.
Bisbee grew up as a mining community but is now known mostly as an artist's haven.
