TUCSON - This weekend kicks off Bike Fest 2012, a six week event that promotes all types of cycling. On Friday night, The Tucson Pedaler, New Belgium Brewery, and Yelp.com are bringing the movie "Clips of Faith," to the Fox Theater at 7 p.m. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit Cyclovia Tucson.
On Saturday, the Athlete Octane Old Pueblo Grand Prix, takes over downtown. It's a criterium race, that is as much fun for the cyclists as well as the spectators.
Kurt Rosenquist, one of the organizers, promises you won't be bored.
"There's never a minute you don't have action right in front of you," he said.
This year, the event will also be live streamed on www.insidecyclingtv.com starting at 4:35 p.m. Playground, Hotel Congress, and Brewed Coffee Lounge will also stream the event for their customers as well.
Additionally, the event has other races anyone can join in on, including a sprint race and a kids ride.
After you've recovered from all of that, head on over to Sunday's Cyclovia Tucson, which is also Downtown. The event closes off almost 5 miles of downtown road, allowing cyclists, roller skaters and walkers, the chance to enjoy the area free of traffic.
"We had 5 thousand the first year, 10 thousand last year, and I wouldn't be surprised if we have 20 thousand people hitting the streets from Downtown to South Tucson this year," said Tucson's Bike and Pedestrian Program Manager, Tom Thivener.
There will also be other activities to get you moving.
"We're going to have a climbing wall, pop up playgrounds, Zumba..."
