TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - The largest street protests in months have been seen on the streets of the Iranian capital today.
Security forces and militiamen clashed with thousands of protesters who were shouting "death to the dictator" outside Tehran University. It's been a day of nationwide student demonstrations.
Witnesses say militiamen waded into the crowds of protesters, beating men and women on the heads and shoulders with batons, while security forces fired tear gas.
Thousands of security forces surrounded universities ahead of protests that pro-reform students called for.
Authorities had taken dramatic steps to hide any protests within the campusses, shutting down cell phones in the area and covering fences with banners and signs to hide anything going on inside.
