Big traffic shift at Grant and Oracle

TUCSON - Drivers who pass through the west side of the city everyday can expect a major shift in traffic on Tuesday.

It is all part of the Tucson RTA project to widen Grant Road from Oracle to Swan. The current phase began in July is scheduled to take twelve months.

At the intersection at Oracle and Grant contractors will shift all traffic in both directions.

On Grant traffic will be shifted from the north side to the south side of the roadway so they can begin demolition on that side of the street.

On Oracle they will shift all traffic from the east side to the west side of the road for demolition as well.

The Tucson DOT also announced that portions of permanent median curbing have been installed, and turning lane restrictions will now become permanent.

Drivers should be aware of several areas with uneven pavement and asphalt "bump" sections.

When the project is done there will be six lanes of traffic and newly designed turning lanes that are supposed to dramatically improve traffic flow in the area.

Despite the promise of an easier commute it is not making it any easier for motorists like Devon Stickrod to remain patient, "It's kind of a pain, kind of hectic but i think once they get it done it will be a lot easier to get around down here, kind of a give and take."

The road crews are expected to have both traffic shifts completed by 6am.
