PHOENIX (AP) - A fatal accident and fire closed Interstate 10 in both directions at the Broadway Curve near the border of Tempe and Phoenix and snarled traffic on several freeways during Thursday's morning commute.
One westbound lane reopened several hours after the accident, but as of late morning the Arizona Department of Transportation hadn't said when the rest will reopen.
It advises motorists to delay travel or use alternate routes.
The accident left a big-rig's trailer lying on its side on one side of I-10 and the burned-out cab on the other side of the median barrier.
The closure backed up traffic on I-10 and westbound US 60 and congested other routes.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman says the tractor-trailer's driver was killed and that several people in other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
