TUCSON - Things are changing on Miracle Mile. Historical hotels are turning into new businesses and the economic outlook is looking good for the area.
Before the 1980's, Miracle Mile flourished. It was the place to be, you might even say it was glamorous, but after that, it was all downhill. Drug dealers and prostitution took away the shine.
These days the somber tune of things is changing.
Monterey Court studio galleries just opened up on miracle mile - owner Greg Haver says over the last couple of months, business has already expanded.
"Miracle Mile certainly has a checkered past, but I think we're trying to turn that page and go on to new and better things," Haver said. "I'm extremely pleased with the response, it's just overwhelming based on our Mercury Portal event."
There are 16 studio galleries here for anyone who wants to set-up shop and start a business, and so far all of them are rented out except for one.
Cynthia Roedig is renting - she's selling everything from jewelry to salad dressing...
"I was ambivalent about miracle mile and I'm not sure, but then progress was made, a friend of mine also has a shop here and she's like you've got to come down and see this,"
"I think this is a marvelous re-birth of miracle mile," said Paul Clinco while visiting the shops on the street.
People are taking notice, and say there needs to be more businesses like the Monterey Court on Miracle Mile.
"It demonstrates to the entire city of Tucson that Miracle Mile is not a toilet anymore," Clinco said.
"The sky's the limit, we have the opportunity to make this into a really interesting new area," Haver said.
