Benefit to help Good Samaritan killed in New Year's homicide

TUCSON - The family of one of the victim's intentionally run over and killed on New Year's Day is planning a benefit to help pay for funeral expenses.

Patrick Balbastro was one of three people intentionally run over on New Year's Day.

Balbastro is the Good Samaritan who stopped with his girlfriend to help Cindy Burnett who, police say, was assaulted by Michael Leday in a south side neighborhood.

Law enforcement officials say that Leday then got into Balbastro's car and ran three of them over.

Both Balbastro and Burnett died of their injuries, while Balbastro's girlfriend remains hospitalized. Leday has a felony warrant out for his arrest.

Balbastro's family is now planning a benefit to celebrate his life and to take a stand against domestic violence.

The benefit will be on Saturday January 25th from noon-6pm at The Wooden Nickel at 1908 S. Country Club Rd.

There will be food, live music and raffles. Admission is $5 per person.
