TUCSON - A fawn dropped off at the Drexel Heights Fire Department last night has Arizona Game and Fish reminding residents that more often than not, it's better to leave baby wildlife alone.

On Monday night, a resident found a baby dear on the road near Three Points, and dropped it off at the Drexel Heights Fire Department, who turned it over to the Forever Wild Animal Rehab center.

Because of the danger spreading Chronic Wasting Disease, deer should almost never be taken in from the wild, stated Mark Hart with AZGFD.

A representative from Forever Wild wants to prevent the baby fawn from being euthanized, but they need to find the person who dropped the animal off originally, so they can get an idea of where to release back into the while when it's old enough.

If you have any information, contact Forever Wild's Darlene Braastad at 520-574-3579.

According to Mark Hart, residents have picked up three fawns in the last 10 days. He reminds residents to leave fawns where they find them - if the baby deer is found lying in the road, it can be moved off, but otherwise, avoid touching them, he said.

"If you have taken a young deer from the wild, immediately take it back to exactly where you found it. Do not release it in a different location; its mother will be unable to find it," AZGFD Regional Supervisor Raul Vega said, adding that if you cannot return it to the wild, the public should call the Arizona Game and Fish Wildlife Center at 623-582-9806 or the Game and Fish Tucson office at 520-628-5376 immediately.

In a news release, Game and Fish states that before you assume an animal is in trouble, wait and watch: young animals are often left alone for hours at a time while their parents gather food. If an animal is shivering, obviously injured, or if its parents have been killed, then call a wildlife rehabilitator.
