WATERFORD, N.Y. (AP) - An Arizona man who killed a romantic rival 40 years ago has been sentenced to as many as 17 years in prison in New York.
Nelson Costello of Prescott, Ariz., pleaded guilty in October to first-degree manslaughter for shooting 22-year-old David Bacon at a Waterford, N.Y., marina in April 1969. The now 63-year-old Costello was a constable in the town and both had dated the same woman.
Costello apologized to members of Bacon's family as he was sentenced Friday under 1969 guidelines that could see him released after serving just more than 5 years. He has agreed to help find Bacon's body, which authorities believe is buried somewhere in Virginia.
A tip passed along by Costello's sister in 2008 led to his arrest.
Waterford is in Saratoga County just north of Albany.
