PHOENIX (AP) - Workers enrolled in the state's retirement system will get refunds of about $277 each because a judge overturned increases in their retirement contributions as unconstitutional.
The Arizona State Retirement System estimates the refunds to about 200,000 workers will cost state and local government agencies about $58 million. The Arizona Republic reports state general fund will cover just more than $41 million and the rest will come from cities, counties and other government jurisdictions.
A group of workers sued after the Legislature increased what they must pay for retirement last year. A judge last week ruled the Legislature illegally changed the contract between workers and the state.
The House and Senate are expected to provide the money as part of the budget deal now being negotiated.
