Authorities search for explosives in Ariz. desert

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities are searching the desert east of the Phoenix area following the discovery of ammunition and what appeared to be live hand grenades.

Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman Brandon Jones says authorities late Monday night detonated what appeared to be live hand grenades found a site on the Tonto National Forest.

Jones says he didn't know how many grenades were found but says they were in one ammunition canister. He says the hikers who reported finding the grenades also found several canisters with ammunition for guns.

Jones says there also was a map indicating there may be more explosives in other locations in the same area off State Route 87 north of Mesa.

According to Jones, about 25 county and federal law enforcement officers are participating in the search.
