Asylum requests from immigrants on the rise in US

WASHINGTON - An internal Homeland Security document shows that requests for asylum in the United States have nearly quadrupled in the last five years.

According to the document, a draft of congressional testimony for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Associate Director Joseph Langlois, and obtained by The Associated Press, the agency received more than 19,119 asylum requests through the end of May and anticipates receiving a total of more than 28,600 by the end of the fiscal year.

According to the document, during the 2009 budget year the agency received just 5,369 such requests.

Langlois was initially set to testify about asylum requests last month, but that appearance was cancelled. He is expected to testify before a House oversight subcommittee Wednesday.
