TUCSON - Today on News 4 Tucson at 4 p.m., "Arts and Culture Guy" Herb Stratford previewed some of the theater, arts, and other fun events happening this weekend. Here's what he had to say:
It's not often that the two worlds of professional sports and theatre intersect, but thanks to the Arizona Theatre Company's presentation of "Lombardi" that time is now.
Set during a pivotal week in 1965, this play, based on the book "When Pride Still Mattered: A life of Vince Lombardi" by David Maraniss, the play examines what happens when a young sportswriter gets the chance to interview the legendary coach while staying at his home. What the young writer experiences is much more than just good football, he sees Lombardi as a man behind the legend.
The Tucson Botanical Gardens has a unique art exhibit on display in their Porter Hall gallery. Entitled "Pollinators" the mixed media works are by artist Catherine Eyde, and depict a variety of desert creatures including bats, bees and birds in her surreal, folk-inspired artworks. On display through November 12, the show is a unique view of the desert world we rarely think about.
And if you're looking for some great live music to experience this weekend, the Dmitri Metheny Group will perform at the Tohono Chul Park in the last of the Tucson Jazz Society's "Jazz Under the Stars" series Friday Night at 7 The group will present a Jazz Noir program with music from films along with standards from the Great American Song Book.
