Arpaio recall group says it has 200,000 signatures

PHOENIX - A group seeking to oust Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says it has gathered 60 percent of the voter signatures needed to force a recall election against the lawman.

Recall organizers say they've gathered 200,000 of the 335,000 valid signatures needed to prompt an election.

The group has added 30,000 signatures since last giving an update more than two weeks ago.

His critics say the sheriff should be booted because his office racially profiled Latinos in its trademark immigration patrols, failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crimes cases, and has cost the county $25 million in legal settlements over treatment in county jails.

The sheriff's supporters say Arpaio won his sixth term in November fair and square and that the recall effort is an unconstitutional attempt to harass him.
