PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says an inmate of the Lower Buckeye jail beat and stabbed his cellmate to death.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio told The Associated Press that 20-year-old Nike Black is still being interviewed Saturday night after alerting detention officers around 7:12 a.m. that 50-year-old John Klatt was bleeding.
Klatt had been beaten and stabbed in the eye with a small pencil.
Arpaio says Black is not talking to investigators and doesn't know if Black has an attorney.
Arpaio says officers checked on the pair just minutes earlier. Despite efforts by medical staff, Klatt was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.
The two had been housed together since Dec. 11, and had no known previous conflicts. Klatt was awaiting trial on sexual exploitation of a minor. Black faced charges of domestic violence, assault and criminal trespassing.
