Army recruiter arrested for alleged sexual conduct with 16-year-old

TUCSON - An Army recruiter is accused of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old Flowing Wells High School student.

Staff Sgt. Matthew Roberts, 29, was arrested Wednesday. News 4 Tucson was the only media outlet on the scene as he was taken into custody.

According to a Pima County Sheriff's Department search warrant, Roberts' involvement with the student began when he gave her his business card. She contacted him with questions about the military, but eventually, she said, the conversations became inappropriate.

According to the warrant, Roberts went to a Three Points park two times with the alleged victim, where there was sexual contact. The warrant also says they sent each other nude photos.

Wednesday, he went down to the Sheriff's Department for a different warrant, and while there, detectives determined they had enough evidence to make an arrest.

Roberts' lawyer declined to comment to News 4 Tucson reporters at the scene.

Roberts made his initial appearance in court Wednesday night. He was released without having to post bond. He is not allowed to contact the alleged victim or anybody else under 17 years old.

He is charged with five counts of Sexual Conduct with a Minor.
