Armed teen taken into custody after SWAT standoff

VAIL - An armed 17-year-old boy was taken into custody Wednesday after a SWAT standoff that lasted several hours.

Pima County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 10800 block of S. Alley Mountain Dr. near Cienega High School at around 5:30 p.m. Neighbors reported seeing the teen pointing a handgun at his head in a drainage culvert between two homes. Deputies secured the scene and evacuated two nearby homes. They called in SWAT when the teen refused to drop the weapon.

According to deputy Tracy Suitt, the teen surrendered to SWAT negotiators shortly before 10:30 p.m. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation. No injuries were reported.

Suitt said the incident is being treated as a mental health issue and it's unclear if the teen will face any charges. The investigation is ongoing.
