Arizona youth apply for Obama program most

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona youth brought to the U.S. illegally as children have the highest application rate for President Barack Obama's deferred status program.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program allows some youth who lack legal status protection from deportation while also allowing them to work legally.

A new report by the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute shows that 66 percent of eligible DACA recipients in Arizona actually apply for the status. About 34,000 total qualify, and an estimated 23,000 have applied, according to the report. About 20,000 have been approved.

But the state has denied driver's licenses for DACA recipients at the directive of Republican Gov. Jan Brewer. A federal appeals court overturned her orders last month. Brewer is appealing the decision.
